With the appointment of a new Chinese ambassador to Jamaica, Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw is pledging his Ministry’s continued support for the Government and people of China.

Speaking during a courtesy call at his New Kingston offices on May 30, 2018, Minister Shaw welcomed the newly appointed Chinese ambassador-designate to Jamaica, His Excellency Tian Qi. He informed the ambassador that Jamaica and China have always had a very good relationship.

“We are grateful for the relationship we have developed with China over the years. Relations between us are active and dynamic. Jamaica’s support for China has resulted in vibrant and mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation programmes between both countries,” said Minister Shaw.

The Minister welcomed the levels of investments that China has been making in regards to construction and road infrastructure development but, expressed his desire to see an increase in the promotion of the agricultural sector going forward. This, he noted, would further assist Jamaica in expanding its production capacity, unlocking financing opportunities and promoting investment in critical areas.

Both the minister and the ambassador-designate expressed hope for increased bilateral cooperation between the countries during the ambassador’s tenure.

The ambassador expressed his love for Jamaica and the warmth and love of the Jamaican people and said that he was confident that the good relationship which Jamaica and China share will continue.

“What I want the Government and people of Jamaica to see is the fruits of the co-operation between China and Jamaica. There are more opportunities for further co-operation. This is a life-long partnership and I look forward to working with you Minister”, the ambassador added.

Qi, who served most recently as ambassador to Yemen, also thanked Jamaica for its support of China throughout the years.
