Ninety-eight farmers registered with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) will benefit from a $2.88 million insurance payout under the GraceKennedy Weather Protection Programme to aid their recovery from the impact of Hurricane Melissa.

The parametric insurance product, administered by GraceKennedy (GK) General Insurance Company Limited, is designed to safeguard the livelihoods of local farmers and fishers against extreme weather events, including excess rainfall, drought, and hurricane-force winds.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining is advising exporters and stakeholders that, due to significant structural damage sustained during Hurricane Melissa, export operations at the Plant Quarantine and Produce Inspection (PQPI) Branch Export Complex in Montego Bay have been temporarily suspended.

As part of the Ministry’s business continuity measures, all export inspection and related services normally conducted at the Montego Bay facility will now be processed through the Plant Quarantine Export Complex in Kingston until further notice.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, is urging farmers and fishers to enrol in the GraceKennedy (GK) Weather Protection Programme amid the increasing threat of climate-related catastrophes.

Minister Green stated that weather disasters such as Hurricane Melissa are now “part of the course” in the agricultural sector due to climate change. As such, farmers and fishers should ensure they are adequately prepared for these eventualities.

World 100-Metre Champion Donates $500,000 to Assist Farmers Impacted by Melissa

Jamaica’s 100-metre World Champion, Oblique Seville, has partnered with United Way of Jamaica to assist farmers impacted by Hurricane Melissa.

Seville has donated $500,000 to the organisation’s Restoration and Rehabilitation Fund, which will primarily assist the farming community.

This is through the provision of financial assistance, equipment, and supplies to help farmers rebuild their farms, homes, and livelihoods.
