Fisheries Ministry hands over crucial inputs to fishers in Clarendon and St. Elizabeth

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, through the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), recently handed over 219 rolls of mesh wire to fishers in South East Clarendon and South St. Elizabeth on August 22, courtesy of the Sandals Foundation. The wires will be used to replace fish pots that were lost during Hurricane Beryl.

Approximately 127 rolls were distributed to fishers in Portland Cottage and Rocky Point in Clarendon while 92 rolls were provided to fishers in Great Bay, St. Elizabeth.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, presented sixty-two artisanal fishers of Parottee, St. Elizabeth with vouchers from the National Fisheries Authority to acquire 2 rolls of 1 ½ inch mesh wire to aid in building fish pots and traps that were lost during the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

The presentations which have a value of approximately $3.1 million, were made on Friday, August 16 at the Parottee Seventh-Day Adventist Church and fall under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining’s Hurricane Beryl Fisheries Recovery Programme.

Tremendous growth for agriculture in the second quarter

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, said the agriculture sector experienced tremendous growth in the second quarter of 2024.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining kickstarted the recovery of the banana and plantain sector with the distribution of vouchers to purchase fertilizers to over 20 banana and plantain farmers in Highgate, St. Mary.

In a bid to further support fisherfolk who were impacted during Hurricane Beryl’s passage on July 3, the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), on Friday (August 30), distributed cash vouchers to those based in Whitehouse, Westmoreland, who suffered losses.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, participated in Friday’s exercise, which saw approximately 109 fishermen and women receiving vouchers.
