The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, through the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), recently handed over 219 rolls of mesh wire to fishers in South East Clarendon and South St. Elizabeth on August 22, courtesy of the Sandals Foundation. The wires will be used to replace fish pots that were lost during Hurricane Beryl.

Approximately 127 rolls were distributed to fishers in Portland Cottage and Rocky Point in Clarendon while 92 rolls were provided to fishers in Great Bay, St. Elizabeth.
Through the NFA, some fishers also received vouchers to replace their damaged or lost nets.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Floyd Green, noted that “We also have some fishers who do nets and as such, we will be, in addition to the rolls, providing today, vouchers of $25,000 each to fishers who do net fishing so that they can get that input. So, we never had to choose, we could do that in addition to the support that is being provided by Sandals.”

Minister Green highlighted that the collaboration between the Ministry and the Sandals Foundation has allowed for more fishers to be impacted.

Minister Green was speaking at the handover ceremony of the inputs at the Caribbean Coastal Area Management (C-CAM) Foundation Field Station in Salt River, Clarendon.
The handing over of inputs to fishers is part of ongoing efforts through the Ministry’s Hurricane Beryl Fisheries Recovery programme that seeks to provide critical relief support to fishers and to support the rebounding of the fisheries sector following Hurricane Beryl.

The agriculture and fisheries minister outlined that the rehabilitation of fishing beaches is also a part of the overall recovery effort and has listed Portland Cottage and Rocky Point as some of the beaches to receive repairs to their infrastructure.
While speaking at the handing over of mesh wires at the Great Bay Fishing Beach in St. Elizabeth, Minister Green stated that the Ministry will be carrying out much-needed repairs to the infrastructure of the fishing beach.
“We have gotten 100 million dollars and we have identified some beaches that would have suffered damages from Beryl that are in need and Great Bay is one of those areas,” he said.

The minister highlighted that the Ministry, through the NFA, will be making repairs to the common area of the fishing beach and the gear sheds and will also be rehabilitating the bathroom facilities. This, the minister indicated, is to be completed by the end of the year.
