Amended Agricultural Produce Act to combat praedial larceny to be submitted to Cabinet

Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. J.C. Hutchinson, says amendments have been made to the Agricultural Produce Act, which will be submitted to Cabinet shortly.
The Act is part of strategies being used to combat the “scourge of praedial larceny”.
Making the announcement at a virtual town hall meeting on praedial larceny on Wednesday (June 10), at the Ministry’s Hope Gardens offices, Mr. Hutchinson said the matter is on the agenda for the 2020/21 financial year.

2,000 Drip Irrigation Systems To Be Distributed To Farmers

Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw, says 2000 drip irrigation systems will be distributed to small farmers across the island.

He said the systems will provide farmers with access to irrigation for planting and ensure that the agriculture sector continues to grow, despite the shift in rainfall pattern due to climate change.

Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, says that the Bernard Lodge Development project is designed to help modernize and expand the agricultural sector by increasing production, thereby improving Jamaica’s food security, creating jobs, and growing the economy.

He noted that Jamaica’s agricultural sector plays an essential role in our country’s economic growth and development, accounting for more than 7 per cent of national Gross Domestic Product.

$10 million allocated to procure agriculture supplies for sector

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries has allocated $10 million under the Production Incentive Programme for the procurement of seeds, water tanks, planting material for the production of sweet yam and cassava, as well as fertilizers and chemicals to stimulate increased agricultural production.

Ministry To Revisit Proposal For Dedicated Days For Praedial Larceny Cases

For the 2020/2021 financial year, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries will revisit a proposal for the scheduling of dedicated days for the hearing of praedial larceny cases, to increase the rate of convictions in these matters.
