The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, will be assisting the Ebony Park HEART/NSTA Trust with establishing 100 acres of fruit trees in line with the Ministry's New FACE of Food initiative.

The announcement was made by the Ministry’s State Minister, the Hon. Franklin Witter, at the World Food Day National Ceremony and Exposition held at the Ebony Park HEART/NSTA Trust, in Clarendon on Wednesday, October 16.

Witter, the keynote speaker at the event, said the Ministry intends to plant “50 acres of Ackee and 50 acres of Mangoes,” which will support the Ministry’s efforts to drive food security and expand exports.

He said that the Ministry would provide the necessary resources to the school to establish the orchard fields free of cost.

“Please note that the Ministry will provide the following free of charge to the school: all the fruit trees, all seeds that are required, irrigation hoses and accessories, assistance with land preparation, technical advice, and training. All of these will be provided free of cost to this institution right here,” he outlined.

The state minister outlined that the orchard fields will be equipped with the proper infrastructure to ensure the fields are properly managed and sustained.

“Additionally, all fields will be equipped with a comprehensive irrigation system, including a fertigation system, to ensure optimal water and nutrient management,” Witter shared.

He adds that other crops will be planted which will supply the school’s canteen.

“Also, intercropping of vegetables will be practised in all fields so that we will be able to produce crops that can also help to provide food for the institution here,” Witter highlighted.
