Minister Charles Jr. applauds women in agriculture
KINGSTON, March 8 (JIS):
On International Women’s Day, today (March 8), Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., has applauded female farmers for their gallant efforts, and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to uplifting women in the sector.
“Thirty-two per cent of our farmers are our strong Jamaican women. The theme for International Women’s Day is: ‘Embrace Equity’. I don’t know of another ministry that has policies and plans and executions that embrace equity like the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries,” Mr. Charles said.
The Minister was speaking during a media briefing at the Ministry’s headquarters in St. Andrew, on Wednesday (March 8). “We are not just talking about it on International Women’s Day, but we lift up and recognise our women all year round,” Mr. Charles further stated.
He said women remain a priority for the Ministry, particularly in its thrust to develop the nation’s agricultural sector. Mr. Charles informed that last year, the majority of leases for agricultural lands were issued to young females.
“So, [thanks] to them for the tremendous contribution, in terms of the nurturing and transformation of our nation,” the Minister said.
