As Jamaicans, we have a deep-rooted relationship with banana production and consumption, dating as far back as the 1900s when Jamaica became the first commercial producer of bananas in the Western Hemisphere.

Since then, the fruit has been cemented as one of the most affordable and most consumed staples for Jamaicans – eaten by 98% of the population. In fact, most of the 72,848 tonnes of bananas and 60,586 tonnes of plantains that were produced in Jamaica in 2022, was consumed locally. This observation underpins the notion that bananas and plantains are wonderful components of the typical Jamaican’s diet, including mine.

It is no secret that the banana and plantain industry is extremely susceptible to natural disasters such as hurricanes. In fact, the industry was severely affected by tropical storms Grace and Ida in 2021. However, the industry rebounded to produce more than 72,000 metric tonnes of banana and more than 60,000 metric tonnes of plantain in 2022, which I believe to be a true reflection of resilience.

Therefore, it is indeed most fitting that Banana Day is celebrated in the month of April, which is recognized and celebrated as Farmers’ Month. As we acknowledge April 19, 2023, as Banana Day, it is imperative for us to recognize and honour our over 68,000 farmers operating in the Banana and Plantain Industry, who continue to demonstrate much dedication and resilience, while simultaneously implementing Grow Smart, Eat Smart techniques in their farming practices.

The Banana and Plantain Industry continues to thrive because of you, our farmers. Thank you for your commitment, and your contribution towards our nation’s food security.

One Love.
