RAIN DAMAGE TO CROPS ESTIMATED AT OVER $76 MILLION

KINGSTON, Feb. 9 (JIS):

Preliminary estimates from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) are that damage to crops and livestock in St. Mary and Portland, as a result of heavy rains during the period January 31 to February 1, is approximately $76.8 million, affecting more than 551 farmers.

This was disclosed by Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., during the Ministry’s virtual media briefing, giving an update on the agricultural sector, on February 8.

SMALL RUMINANTS TO BE IMPORTED TO BOOST SECTOR

KINGSTON Feb. 9 (JIS):

Approximately 200 small ruminants are to be imported under the Small Ruminant Development Programme by the end of March, to be distributed to farmers for expansion of the sector.

In his address at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries press briefing on Tuesday (February 8), Portfolio Minister,  Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., said a permit has also been issued by the Ministry to the Small Ruminant Association for an additional 37 small ruminants.

MAJOR INCREASE IN FOOD PRODUCTION LAST QUARTER

KINGSTON, Feb. 8 (JIS):

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has reported a major increase in agricultural produce for the last quarter of 2021.

Preliminary estimates for domestic crop production for the October to December quarter of 2021 show an increase of 18.2 per cent over the corresponding quarter of 2020, moving from 161,639.6 tonnes to 190,990 tonnes.

Significant contributors to the increased production were condiments – 12,755.7 tonnes (50.2 per cent), fruits – 16,123.8 tonnes (36.5 per cent), and vegetables – 67,498.5...
