Green launches insurance coverage for fishing vessels

For the first time, Jamaica’s 26,000 registered fishers will have access to insurance coverage for their vessels, engines and other equipment with the launch of the Safety Net insurance policy provided by Advantage General Insurance Company.

“This Advantage Safety Net policy is the first of its kind. It is the first that artisanal fishers will be able to go into an insurance company to take out an insurance policy to protect their fishing vessels,” said Green.

Agriculture Ministry launches $18.4-million plantain pilot project

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has launched a 10-hectare plantain pilot project to be implemented by The Banana Board at a cost of approximately $18.4 million with a direct contribution of $8 million from farmers.

The project, which is aimed at stimulating the expansion of plantain production, will be implemented over a two-year period, targeting 16 plantain farmers across the parishes of St. Thomas and Portland, and is expected to yield 300 tonnes of plantains per year.   ...
