Jamaicans to benefit from Backyard Gardening Programme to boost food security

Residents in urban and peri-urban spaces across the island are to benefit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries’ Backyard Gardening Programme geared at boosting the country’s food security and emphasizing the importance of eating local produce.

A total of $10million has been allocated for the programme, which will see the distribution of 2,500 backyard gardening kits to grow produce such as ockra, tomato, peas, beans, carrot, onion, cabbage...

Feb. 19 (JIS): Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, says that further growth is projected for the agriculture sector, following a 1.8 per cent growth in the second quarter of last year.

He said that the expansion in activity was achieved despite the challenges facing the sector, including the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the changing rainfall and drought patterns due to climate change, which impacted demand and supply chains.
