For 30-year-old hot pepper farmer, Carlos Williams, participation under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries’ (MICAF) Production Incentive Programme (PIP) represents an opportunity to improve Jamaica’s food security.
“This is a very important programme. It will not only increase food production, but will help to feed a lot of people in communities across Jamaica,” he said.

RADA to get more households to do backyard farming

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), Peter Thompson, says come September, the agency will be rolling out a programme geared at getting more households into farming.

“We’re on that drive now to assist householders that have adequate land space in their backyards. We will be providing kits, which will include packages of seeds, fertilisers and probably some chemicals, as well as instructions as to how to grow these particular vegetables, condiments and others,” Mr. Thompson said, during a recent interview on the JIS television programme...

Support coming for local fisherfolk

Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Floyd Green, says direct government support is coming to local fisherfolk to help them mitigate the impact of COVID-19.

Speaking at the recent launch of the ‘Promoting Community-Based Climate Resilience in the Fisheries Sector’ project, held in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, Mr. Green cited the additional $1 billion in budgetary support to the Ministry, noting that some of that money will be used to directly aid fisherfolk who have had their livelihoods threatened by the ongoing pandemic....

RADA to continue mobile market initiative

The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) will be continuing its mobile market initiative, to assist farmers being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was disclosed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RADA, Peter Thompson, during a recent interview on the JIS television programme, ‘Get the facts’.

The fallout in key sectors, such as Tourism and Education, due to containment measures, has caused farmers to lose valuable markets, leaving them with excess produce.
