The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, through the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), distributed over 400 packages of input supplies to farmers at the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show on August 6 at the Denbigh Showground in Clarendon.
The distribution of packages served as a continuation of relief efforts by the Ministry to support farmers impacted by Hurricane Beryl. Each farmer received one relief package containing inputs such as assorted seeds, fertilisers, and chemicals (pesticides and herbicides).
Additionally, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green announced that supplementing the Ministry’s preliminary relief efforts, such as the direct distribution of supplies and the 700 million JMD allocation, is an additional 1.4 billion JMD that will help rebuild the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
Among the areas to be addressed from the 1.4 billion, are the rehabilitation of fishing beaches that were significantly impacted and the provision of support to greenhouse farmers.
“We have already allocated 55 million to our greenhouse farmers. We are going to allocate an additional 100 million to help you get back on your feet so that you can do what you love,” Green shared.
The agriculture minister highlighted that the funds will also be utilised to build solar-powered storage capacity to mitigate potential loss in times of natural disasters.
“One of the challenges we have with natural disasters, we say to our farmers go out harvest what you can so that the storm doesn’t destroy it. But unfortunately, the farmers harvest and they don’t have anywhere to store it. We are going to be building out solar-powered storage capacities so that when you harvest for a storm you can put it up so that we can have it after the storm,” Green highlighted.
