The Jamaican Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining and the Tephritids Workers of Western Hemisphere (TWWH) are pleased to announce the 11th Meeting that will be hosted by Jamaica in the City of Montego Bay from June 3 to 7, 2024
The Working Group on Fruit Flies of the Western Hemisphere has its origins in the 1980s when it was proposed to bring together researchers and technical staff in charge of the programs against the Mediterranean fruit fly in Guatemala, Mexico and the United States.
The aim was to analyze and discuss research needs and priorities in order to confront more effectively the problems facing these programs. Later, a similar group was formed to meet the research needs of programs against fruit flies of the genus Anastrepha on the American continent. In 1990, following the agreement to unite these two groups, the working group on Fruit Flies of the Western Hemisphere was established (History of the Working Group).
- Promote the exchange of information, knowledge, ideas and experiences that allows feedback and innovation in research, methods development and action programs.
- Facilitate communication and encourage collaboration among scientists, operational program officers and the industry.
- Serve as a platform for collaboration among countries and international agencies.
- Contribute to the sustainable solution of fruit fly problems in the Americas.
In the past three decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of programs implemented against fruit flies in the Western Hemisphere. Our Working Group has experienced similar growth, eight meetings have been held since its establishment: TWWH Events and Commitee Members
This will be the first time that a TWWH event will take place in the Caribbean. The Caribbean is an important and strategic region in the Western Hemisphere. Countries in the region suffer from the presence of fruit fly pests that limit fruit and vegetable production and exports. Given the transboundary nature of fruit fly pests and the increasing risks of introduction of non-native invasive species, strengthening integration and active participation of the Caribbean Community countries to the fruit fly working group of the Western Hemisphere, is a desirable strategic objective.
