Non-Commercial/Personal Imports of Animal, Animal Products and Animal Related Products through the Airport, Seaport and Courier Services

All Live Animals and Products Of Animal Origin Are Subject To Veterinary Control In Accordance With The Animals (Diseases And Importation) Act Of 1948.

Travelers are required by law to declare ALL products of animal origin. This must be declared on Jamaica Customs C5 Declaration Form, section 13(a).

PERSONAL/ NON-COMMERCIAL imports of animal products are allowed up to 45 Kg.

Animal products include food (raw or processed meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, fish, and fishery products), taxidermy items (head, horn, tail), feathers and other animal related products (pet food, feed and feed supplements, veterinary medicinal products), germplasm (semen, embryo, egg).

Products MUST be maintained in their ORIGINAL PACKAGING bearing seal or stamp of competent authority indicating what the product is. Proof of country of origin is required.

Restriction on what food items you can bring into Jamaica varies, depending on the product AND the country of origin.

These requirements may be adjusted at any time as disease situations change.

CURRENT PROHIBITIONS

  • The importation of honey and by-products thereof is strictly prohibited.
  • The importation of pork and pork products (excluding in hermetically sealed cans/ tins) from the USA is strictly prohibited.
  • The importation of beef, beef products and by-products from Canada is strictly prohibited.
  • Live or processed CONCH and LOBSTER is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

HIGH RISK ITEMS

  • Live animals, their parts (feathers, skin, head, horn, tail) and germplasm
  • Meat- raw/fresh/frozen
  • Personally cooked meat

The use of a permit allows for the control of items entering the country.

Chicken identified as prepared cooked meals from home should be thoroughly cooked and should be packaged in clear or transparent packaging and readily identifiable.

 

Pasteurized MILK and CHEESE

Cheese should not contain meat.

PLEASE NOTE ALL ABOVE-MENTIONED ITEMS IMPORTED WITHOUT A VETERINARY IMPORT PERMIT WILL BE CONFISCATED AND DESTROYED.

Baked goods, chocolates, candies, cereals, and other confectionary and snacks (including cakes, donuts, biscuits, crackers, cookies, granola bars, other baked and processed products).

Must not contain meat

 

 

Dry mixes containing dairy and egg ingredients [such as baking mixes, cocoa mixes, drink mixes, instant cake mixes, instant pudding mixes, liquid drink mixes containing reconstituted dry milk or dry milk products] commercially labelled and presented in final finished packaging.

 

 

Condiments such as ketchup (catsup), mustard, mayonnaise, and other prepared sauces that do not contain meat products.

 

 

 Nutritional beverages (hermetically sealed in can or otherwise including ensure, pediasure, glucerna etc.)

 

 

Infant formula (commercial packaging)

 

 

GENERAL NOTE:

  • Restrictions/ Prohibitions on live animals vary, depending on the specie AND the country of origin. In most cases a risk evaluation is required and does not guarantee approval of application or request.
  • CITES is required for protected items or endangered species.
  • VETERINARY DRUGS- a Veterinary Import Permit is required for all domestic imports of veterinary drugs, biologicals and nutraceuticals. A letter from a registered veterinarian licensed to practice in Jamaica should be submitted with the application for import.
  • FEATHERS, TAXIDERMY, SEA SHELLS OR SAND–(CITES IS REQUIRED FOR PROTECTED ITEMS OR ENDANGERED SPECIES. Please contact NEPA - The National Environment and Planning Agency).
