The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has taken another step towards enhancing the services provided to farmers by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), with the official opening of the Hanover parish office building on December 14. The new $110-million facility replaces a 15-year-old dilapidated structure.

Speaking at the official ceremony, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr, acknowledged key players who lobbied for an improved structure throughout the years.

“One of the complaints that we’ve had is having a space where we can interact with farmers and staff that is functional and where they will feel valued. So, I want to truly acknowledge and thank all those before me who made this possible. Whoever you are and wherever you are, we want to salute you for pushing for 15 years” he said.

Minister Charles Jr also extended commendations to farmers and fisherfolk in Hanover for their contribution towards development and sustainability in the agricultural sector.

“Hanover has 7,147 registered farmers and a couple hundreds more who aren’t registered, who need to be. These farmers have contributed to this country seeing six consecutive quarters of growth in the agricultural sector,” he noted.

The Minister has renewed the commitment from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to continue working to remedy the challenges that exist in the agricultural sector. He urged farmers to use the resources offered to them to produce even more, as the ministry continues to work towards reducing Jamaica’s food import bill and achieving food security.
