Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Floyd Green, is encouraging more cassava farmers to become engaged with Rainforest through contractual arrangements, which will lead to increased production and productivity levels of farmers and allow Jamaica to be able to supply more markets with quality Jamaican products.

Minister Green was speaking at the official opening of the Rainforest Processing Plant in Kingston on May 27, 2021, where he commended Rainforest for its investment in agro processing, and its support to farmers with the construction of its new cassava processing plant.

“This is what agriculture is about, not just about primary production, which is very important, but it’s about the valued added, the agro processing, and moving into the markets that demand good quality Jamaican products,” said Minister Green.

“This is one more opportunity for us to develop our local productive sector,” said Brian Jardim, Chief Executive Officer, Rainforest, who noted that the production of bammies was a perfect add-on to other products being sold by the company around the world.

He noted that the plant provided the company with the opportunity manufacture many other cassava products such as chips, bread and sticks.

The factory, he said, is a model plant that is used across Africa which has been adapted to manufacturing in Jamaica and will allow the company to take cassava to the next level.
