Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Pearnel Charles Jr, speaking a virtual media briefing on March 23, where he announces a $122-million fertiliser donation to Jamaica from the Kingdom of Morocco.
Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Pearnel Charles Jr, says farmers are to benefit from a donation of 24,000 bags of fertilisers received from the Kingdom of Morocco, valued at approximately $122 million.
The donation is part of bilateral cooperation between the two countries and will directly assist farmers who are affected by price increases and scarcity caused by a number of factors including inflation and global supply chain shortages.
“This donation forms part of a larger and more substantive technical assistance programme that will examine Jamaica’s soil fertility in order to address some of the underlying issues within the farming sector,” said Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Pearnel Charles Jr.
This announcement was made at a virtual media briefing on March 23, where the Agriculture Minister expressed appreciation to the government and people of the Kingdom of Morocco for the donation, the third such under the technical cooperation agreement.
Stating that the gift could not have come at a better time, Charles Jr., said that with the challenges relating to the fallout from the pandemic and increases in agricultural inputs globally, farmers have been placed at a serious disadvantage.
The donation, he said, forms part of a broader response to the current inflationary pressures facing the farmers and other stakeholders along the value chain within the sector.
Under the technical bilateral cooperation programme training will also be provided for staff in soil fertility analysis. The aim of the programme is to increase crop production and outputs as Jamaica moves towards greater food security and self-sufficiency.
The distribution of the fertilisers will be managed by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority and the Jamaica Agricultural Society.
