Apiculture Extension Services

The extension officers of the Beekeeping Unit serve as consultants to current and prospective beekeepers throughout the island. All the extension officers are trained and practicing beekeepers; therefore supplying the farmers with firsthand, expert knowledge on the best management practices. Technical support is also given on disease control, marketing of bee products, business development, and sourcing of grants/loans.

Farmers are provided guidance on crucial beekeeping operations through:

  • field visits and demonstrations
  • group training sessions
  • residential training sessions

Extension officers are essential to the effective monitoring and development of apiculture in Jamaica. These individuals conduct inspections of apiaries and supervise the establishment of new beekeeping operations. Additionally, they interact with interest groups for the enhancement of the industry. Farmers may also receive assistance in procuring beekeeping equipment through these representatives.
